One of my nearest and dearest friends (who also happens to be a speech pathologist) told me recently about the benefits of Phonological Awareness in children of pre-reading age, and how it has a significant positive effect on both reading and spelling skills. PA helps children become prepared to learn how letters and sounds go together into words, thus laying that extremely important ground-work in the brain which helps move kids toward reading and identifying words on their own! So, naturally, I’m super interested in finding out more about this and how I can incorporate PA exercises and songs into my pre-reading programs with children from ages 3 to 5.
