Shari is a very experienced and patient teacher. We appreciate her ability to accomodate to the uniqueness of each of our children and her creativity to keep them engaged.
“We were particularly proud when Julie encouraged our son to contribute a piece to the Christmas recital. He was only a few months into his lessons, not yet four years old, and performing at his first recital. Her encouraging nature gave him the confidence to rock the crowd!”
“Julie bonded with our son Hani immediately! She has a natural gift working with young children. We were very excited to include music into his weekly activity and we were thrilled to find a teacher that was able to provide the scheduling flexibility that our family needed.”
“In a cheery, yellow studio, on the top floor of a rambling old house in The Junction, you will find one of the best piano teachers in the west end – Julie Sousa. My daughter looks forward to her weekly lessons with Julie and I like the balanced course of study she delivers, which includes finger exercises, pieces, scales, sight-reading and theory.”
“The best music teachers are the ones who let you express your personal creativity in music while still maintaining top-notch technique – no one balances that better than Julie. The best part is that while I may not be pursuing a musical career, my years with Julie have made me believe in myself to continue learning challenging pieces as my most cherished hobby because I’ve come to love playing the piano just that much!”
Most notable about Ruby’s teaching style is her attentiveness to my daughter’s abilities, interests and responsiveness and this enables her to adapt the pace and content of the class accordingly. I appreciate how well-organized the lessons are and that the homework allows steady progress without being overwhelming. Overall, in the short period of time since we started this program, my daughter had been able to partner her pure joy of singing with emerging concrete skills. We look forward to more…
Our two daughters, 9 and 7, have been taking in house lessons with Ruby Chung for the last year. Both immensely enjoy piano and Ruby’s approach. Ruby is patient and mindful of their specific abilities, but also gently challenges them towards greater skill. Ruby inspires them to try new things, but also instills in them the value of practice.
Just wanted to share how pleased I have been with the piano lessons for Marco and Jason. Thank you for your relaxed and flexible approach, and to Thomas, who the boys absolutely love as their piano teacher!
Thomas has inspired our boys (no small feat for two 7 year olds) and has really engaged the boys in music. My hope is to build their skills, confidence and a love for music. Thanks to Thomas for making this happen!
Ruby’s approach allows our kids to tap into what interests them – for instance our 9 year old is able to learn popular music along with music that reinforces her learning. Our children have developed the appropriate level of confidence to appear in recitals, and to practice at home confidently. Ruby is punctual, polite and very pleasant to be around – great traits in any instructor. Our entire family is very happy with Ruby and Annette Street Music.
“She had the ability to make even the most monotonous of tasks, such as scales, enjoyable and my Friday night lessons with her were something I always looked forward to. Considering that she is an extremely accomplished and refined pianist, it is no surprise that I completed RCM grades 5-8 with first class honors, and won many gold medals in competitions under her instruction.”
“I have maintained a friendship with Julie since I completed my musical education and I will say this: anyone who has the opportunity to learn the piano under Julie’s tutelage is extremely fortunate and will be a better piano player because of it.”
“You cannot imagine a better piano teacher than Julie. We looked far and wide for a person who would introduce our daughter to piano in an engaging, contemporary and joyful way. We hit the jackpot. The lessons are fun, the books are fun and practicing is not a chore. In the words of our six year old daughter “I love her prizes, I love her lessons, and she’s a very nice teacher”.”
“Given the commitments (and for me, exhaustion) that limit our practice time, we are both making surprisingly good progress. And I appreciate you never making me feel guilty about lack of practice. I’ve met so many people who have a negative association with piano because of lessons that they were “forced” to take as kids and they don’t play anymore. If the Arts aren’t a joyful part of your life, what’s the point?”
“My daughter Rachel has had a great year with her piano teacher, Ruby. Ruby is gentle and encouraging with Rachel, while also setting a fairly high bar, and Rachel has thrived under her tutelage. They have a great rapport. How pleased was I one afternoon when Rachel came in to see me at the conclusion of her lesson smiling broadly and announced, “That was a great lesson!” — nothing speaks louder than that!”
Our kids are inspired by Shari’s love of music and are eager to please her in their lessons. Her addition of voice to their piano lessons has made the lessons more creative and more fun.
Annette’s Young Musicians is the first musical program my 7-year-old has taken part in and it has been a fun and educational experience. My daughter looks forward to her lessons with Instructor Ruby Chung each week and she particularly enjoys the song selection. A lot of the songs are classics and we both enjoy humming them together outside of class.
